Stepping back into history with The Hydro
After being appointed by Squire Hotels as a client back in January, KRPR began the exciting task of raising local and national awareness of the three hotels under the Squire’s brand; Etrop Grange, Manchester, The Hydro, Windermere, and Samlesbury Hotel in Preston.
What better way to start than with a trip down memory lane! To mark the re-opening of The Hydro following its £1m refurbishment programme we stepped back in history and asked the community to get involved too!
The campaign, ‘The Hydro through the ages’ was simple. We hoped that by appealing to locals and those that once lived in the area for any memorabilia they may have kept over the years that we could bring the Hydro’s history to life!
Dating back to 1881, The Hydro is one of Windermere’s oldest hotels and as you can imagine, the many years of service came with lots of memorabilia being sent in and even donated back to the hotel.
The campaign was widespread with coverage throughout the local media. We had a great response with 21 pieces of really unusual memorabilia being sourced; from a Hydropathic menu dating back to 1882 and a branded tie once worn as part of the uniform, to original hotel crockery and stunning wedding photos from 1957. The memorabilia really did show the journey that The Hydro has taken over the years.
To exhibit the campaign, KRPR arranged and coordinated an afternoon tea event, held at The Hydro which was attended by local dignitaries, the media and locals who had contributed memorabilia from over the years.
The event was a huge success. Not only did the guests love the new refurbishment at the hotel and the delicious afternoon tea; but displaying the memorabilia in the newly refurbished orangery room, allowed guests to delve into the history of the hotel and share their memories, many of whom actually knew one another!
